Dr. Claire Huckins passed away Saturday September 7, 2002 after a brief
illness. Dr. Huckins is best remembered for her highly cited studies on the
cell associations in spermatogenesis (Apale, Aaligned, Aisolated). She was
also the first to recognize the important contributions of both apoptosis
and proliferation in spermatogenesis, and she published the landmark papers
describing the existence of the stem cells in the testis and defining their
morphological characteristics in the seminiferous tubule. Dr. Huckins work
is still widely cited today, although since 1976 she focused her efforts in
the area of medical education. More recently, Dr. Huckins served as a
Senior Associate Dean and a Professor in the Department of Molecular and
Cellular Biology at Baylor College of Medicine. She contributed greatly to
our understanding of spermatogenesis and to the education of future
physicians at Baylor College of Medicine. She will be missed by the
faculty, staff and students at Baylor College of Medicine, her many friends
and colleagues and by the scientific community.
