Re-test same sample for sperm morphology

Regarding Dr. Tyler's comment on re-testing the same stored smear for sperm
morphology:

Dr. Tyler's comments are very valuable. Is it possible that we continue to
store smears for morphology assessment if necessary, because instructions
for CLIA require this for PAP smears? The CAP checklist also includes this.
Perhaps we should re-assess why we need to store duplicate samples or store
already tested slides instead of requesting a repeat semen analysis. I
can't recall any time when a physician's diagnosis hasn't matched our lab
report, making it necessary for us to re-test the same slide. As QC step,
one might want to prepare two smears, if the first doesn't stain well and
discard both immediately after use. Dr. Tyler is right, physicians request
a repeat semen analysis if necessary. If we can convince CLIA and CAP that
storage of slides are not necessary, this will save at least one step for
the laboratory. Thanks for bringing this up.
