Androlog Mail:

The following message was sent to me by a patient, whose identity I have
agreed to block. I am curious as to what the membership thinks. I will
forward opinions to the fellow after hearing from all of you.

Dear Dr. Ohl:
I will try to keep this as concise as possible. Four years ago I had a
vasectomy. After surgery I always had pain associated with the right
testicle------the left seemed to heal pretty well. Approximately 3-4 months
later swelling occurred in the testicles mainly on the right side. it was
followed with difficulty to breath and some facial swelling. I was treated
in the hospital and was released two days later. I have had repeated
episodes similar to above usually every 6 months. Lately it has been around
every 3 months. The difficulty to breath and facial swelling has become
more severe as this continues. Each episode occurs after there has been
inflammation and pain in the testicles---usually the right side. I have
seen three different urologists and allergists during this span of time.
without any specific testing, the conclusion they all draw is it appears I
am having an allergic reaction to perhaps sperm which may be leaking due to
acute epididymitis; though no one has heard of symptoms like I have. the
urologists recommend having my epididymis removed thus eliminating the
problems stemming in this area which should resolve the leaking of sperm and
therefore the severe allergies. It all seems to make sense-----but I would
like to know if there is a test to determine if in fact I am allergic to my
sperm. Nobody seems to have heard of such a test. I am presently on a
daily prescription of Zyrtec an allergy antihistimine and carry a epi-pen.
I am currently torn on what to do------I hate to have my epididymis removed
if i wasn't allergic to the sperm. However, without knowing there may not
be an alternative. I am extremely anxious to hear your thoughts and look
forward to receiving your reply. if you initially need further information
or if you have any questions, please let me know. I want to thank you in
advance for your help!!
